What Is Euchre? A Quick Beginner’s Guide to the Midwest’s Favorite Card Game

Image
Looking to learn a fun, fast-paced card game that’s easy to pick up and wildly addictive? Meet  Euchre  — a regional classic with deep Midwest roots, now thriving in Charleston, SC thanks to our growing community at the  Charleston Euchre Club . Whether you’ve never heard of it or you’ve seen it played but never joined in, this guide will give you everything you need to know to get started. ♠️ What Is Euchre? Euchre is a trick-taking card game played with four players in teams of two. The goal? Be the first team to reach 10 points by winning hands (also called “tricks”). It uses a special deck of just 24 cards — Aces through 9s — and has its own unique rules and power cards, including the famous “bowers” (Jacks) that change the hierarchy of suits. ♥️ How the Game Works Each player is dealt five cards. A card is flipped up from the deck — this begins the process of deciding  trump , the suit that beats all others for that hand. Players take turns deciding whether to m...

Charleston has always been a city rooted in tradition — but it also knows how to have fun. That’s why Euchre fits so perfectly here. 🌴  Outdoor-Friendly, Brewery-Ready Charleston’s year-round warmth and vibrant brewery scene make it ideal for casual card nights. Whether you’re playing indoors at Indigo Reef Brewing Co. or under the stars at Edisto River Brewing Co., the vibe is always just right. 🀝  Southern Hospitality Meets Midwestern Strategy Euchre might have Midwest roots, but it thrives in Charleston because of its blend of competitiveness and friendliness. It’s not about cutthroat play — it’s about laughs, high-fives, and a little bragging...

Euchre Terms & Phrases Every Player Should Know

Image
Whether you're brand new or brushing up on your strategy, learning the lingo makes the game more fun — and helps you fit right in at the table. Here’s a quick glossary of commonly used Euchre terms you’ll hear around the Charleston Euchre Club. Bower The two Jacks of the trump color. The  Right Bower  (Jack of trump suit) is the highest card in the game, followed by the  Left Bower  (Jack of the same-color suit). Trump The suit declared at the start of a hand that beats all others. Up-Card The card flipped face-up from the kitty after dealing. It’s used to help decide the trump suit. Kitty The four leftover cards after everyone is dealt five. The top card becomes the up-card; the rest stay face down. Trick A single round of play where each player puts down one card. Highest card in the led suit (or highest trump) wins. Euchred When the team that called trump fails to win 3 tricks. The opposing team scores 2 points. Going Alone A player chooses to play without their p...

Top 5 Mistakes New Euchre Players Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Image
New to Euchre? You’re not alone. At Charleston Euchre Club, we welcome new players every week — and most of them start the same way: learning by doing, asking questions, and yes… making a few common mistakes. Here are the top 5 we see all the time — plus how to avoid them so you can play confidently and have more fun at the table. ♠️  1. Not Following Suit If someone leads with a heart and you have a heart in your hand, you must play it. Forgetting to follow suit — even accidentally — is called a reneg, and it’s a big no-no. It results in a 2-point penalty and disrupts the game. Pro tip: Always double-check your hand before playing. ♥️  2. Forgetting the Left Bower Is Trump The Jack of the same-color suit is the second strongest card in the game. If spades are trump, the Jack of clubs becomes the  Left Bower  and counts as trump too. Many new players overlook this, which can cost their team big time. ♦️  3. Calling Trump Too Aggressively Just because you have on...

How We Teach Euchre at Charleston Euchre Club

Image
New to Euchre? Don’t worry — you’ll pick it up quickly, and our members are always happy to help you learn. We just ask that you review the basics beforehand so you’re ready to jump in. Here’s your step-by-step guide to how we play Euchre at Charleston Euchre Club. 🎴 The Setup Euchre is played with 4 players split into 2 teams. Sit across from your partner. The deck only includes 9s through Aces. Each player is dealt 5 cards. The remaining 4 cards form the kitty, and the top card of the kitty is flipped face-up — this becomes the potential trump suit. A hand consists of 5 tricks. First team to 10 points wins the game. πŸƒ How a Hand Starts After the kitty card is flipped, each player (starting left of the dealer) has one chance to tell the dealer to “pick it up” — making that suit the trump. If someone does, the dealer adds it to their hand and discards one. If everyone passes, a second round begins where players can name a different suit as trump. If all pass again, the dealer must ca...
