What Is Euchre? A Quick Beginner’s Guide to the Midwest’s Favorite Card Game
Whether you’ve never heard of it or you’ve seen it played but never joined in, this guide will give you everything you need to know to get started.
♠️ What Is Euchre?
Euchre is a trick-taking card game played with four players in teams of two. The goal? Be the first team to reach 10 points by winning hands (also called “tricks”).
It uses a special deck of just 24 cards — Aces through 9s — and has its own unique rules and power cards, including the famous “bowers” (Jacks) that change the hierarchy of suits.
♥️ How the Game Works
Each player is dealt five cards. A card is flipped up from the deck — this begins the process of deciding trump, the suit that beats all others for that hand. Players take turns deciding whether to make that suit trump or pass. If all four players pass twice, the dealer is forced to choose — a rule known as “Stick the Dealer.”
Once trump is chosen, play begins. The player to the dealer’s left leads a card, and each player must follow suit if they can. The highest card in the suit (or highest trump if any is played) wins the trick.
Winning three or more tricks scores points. But if your team calls trump and doesn’t win three? That’s a euchre, and the other team scores instead!
