What Is Euchre? A Quick Beginner’s Guide to the Midwest’s Favorite Card Game

Looking to learn a fun, fast-paced card game that’s easy to pick up and wildly addictive?

Meet Euchre — a regional classic with deep Midwest roots that continues to grow in popularity thanks to its simple rules, social nature, and surprising depth of strategy.

Whether you’ve never heard of it or you’ve seen it played but never joined in, this guide will give you everything you need to know to get started.

♠️ What Is Euchre?

Euchre is a trick-taking card game played with four players in teams of two. The goal is simple: be the first team to reach 10 points by winning hands (also called tricks).

It uses a special deck of just 24 cards — Aces through 9s — and has its own unique rules and power cards, including the famous bowers (Jacks) that change the hierarchy of suits.

♥️ How the Game Works

Each player is dealt five cards. A card is flipped up from the deck, beginning the process of selecting trump — the suit that beats all others for that hand.

Players take turns deciding whether to make that suit trump or pass. If all four players pass, a second round of bidding begins. If everyone passes again, many groups play a rule called Stick the Dealer, where the dealer must choose a trump suit.

Once trump is selected, play begins. The player to the dealer's left leads a card, and each player must follow suit if able. The highest card in the suit led — or the highest trump card if trump is played — wins the trick.

Winning three or more tricks scores points. But if your team calls trump and fails to win at least three tricks, you've been euchred, and the opposing team scores instead.

♦️ What Makes Euchre So Fun?

  • Quick games — most take only 15–20 minutes
  • Easy to learn but difficult to master
  • Constant strategic decisions
  • Great for social gatherings and community events
  • Every hand feels important

Many new players pick up the basics after just a few hands, but the strategy keeps experienced players coming back for years.

♣️ Ready to Learn More?

The best way to learn Euchre is to play it. Review the basics, join a game, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Most experienced players are happy to help newcomers get comfortable with the rules.
