Whether you’ve never heard of it or you’ve seen it played but never joined in, this guide will give you everything you need to know to get started. ♠️ What Is Euchre? A card is flipped up from the deck, beginning the process of selecting trump — the suit that beats all others for that hand. Players take turns deciding whether to ma...

Euchre Terms & Phrases Every Player Should Know

Whether you're brand new or brushing up on your strategy, learning the lingo makes the game more fun — and helps you fit right in at the table. Here’s a quick glossary of commonly used Euchre terms you’ll hear around the Charleston Euchre Club. Bower The two Jacks of the trump color. The Right Bower (Jack of trump suit) is the highest card in the game, followed by the Left Bower (Jack of the same-color suit). Trump The suit declared at the start of a hand that beats all others. Up-Card The card flipped face-up from the kitty after dealing. It’s used to help decide the trump suit. Next The suit of the same color as the up-card. Often considered the default trump if players pass. Kitty The four leftover cards after everyone is dealt five. The top card becomes the up-card; the rest stay face down. Trick A single round of play where each player puts down one card. Highest card in the led suit (or highest trump) wins. Lead Playing the first card in a trick. Euchred When the team that ...

Top 5 Mistakes New Euchre Players Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Image
New to Euchre? You’re not alone. At Charleston Euchre Club, we welcome new players all the time — and most of them start the same way: learning by doing, asking questions, and making a few common mistakes along the way. Here are five of the biggest beginner mistakes we see — and how to avoid them. ♠️ 1. Not Following Suit If someone leads a suit and you have a card in that suit, you must play it. Forgetting to follow suit — even accidentally — is called a reneg and can result in a penalty. Before you play a card, always take a quick look through your hand to make sure you're following suit correctly. ♥️ 2. Forgetting the Left Bower Is Trump This is the most common beginner mistake in Euchre. The Jack of the same color as trump becomes the Left Bower and counts as trump. For example: If Spades are trump, the Jack of Clubs is also trump. If Hearts are trump, the Jack of Diamonds is also trump. Many new players forget this rule and accidentally play the Left Bower as its printed suit....

Here’s a step-by-step guide to how Euchre works. 🎴 The Setup Euchre is played with four players split into two teams. Partners sit across from each other. The deck contains only 24 cards: 9s 10s Jacks Queens Kings Aces Each player is dealt five cards. The remaining four cards form the kitty, and the top card is turned face up. This card begins the process of selecting trump. A hand consists of five tricks.
