How to Play
It’s one of the best card games around: easy to learn, quick to play, and full of strategy and surprises. Here’s how it works:
π΄ The Basics
Euchre is played with four players in two teams of two. Partners sit across from each other. The deck uses only 24 cards — 9s through Aces — in all four suits. Each player is dealt 5 cards. The remaining 4 cards go in the center as the kitty, with the top card flipped face-up to start the bidding.
π Choosing Trump
Starting to the dealer’s left, each player has one chance to accept or pass on the face-up card as trump. If someone accepts, the dealer picks it up and discards one card. If all players pass, a second round begins — this time, players can name a different suit as trump. If everyone passes again, the dealer must choose a suit. This is called Stick the Dealer.
♠️ Trump Suits & Bowers
The trump suit beats all others — and its Jacks are special.
• The Right Bower (Jack of trump) is the highest card in the game.
• The Left Bower (Jack of the same-color suit) is the second-highest and also counts as trump.
For example, if Hearts are trump, the Jack of Diamonds becomes the Left Bower and acts like a Heart.
♥️ Playing the Hand
The player to the dealer’s left leads the first card. Everyone must follow suit if they can. If you don’t have the suit led, you can play any card — including trump.
• The highest trump played wins the trick.
• If no trump is played, the highest card in the suit led wins.
• The winner of each trick leads the next one.
Each hand has 5 tricks total.
♣️ Scoring Points
Points are awarded based on how many tricks your team wins and who called trump:
• Win 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point
• Win all 5 tricks (a “march”): 2 points
• Call trump and lose (get “euchred”): 2 points to opponents
• Go alone and win 3–4 tricks: 1 point
• Go alone and win all 5 tricks: 4 points
First team to reach 10 points wins the game.
