Did You Just Say... Stick the Dealer?! What It Means in Euchre and Why It Matters
But what does it actually mean?
Let’s break it down so you never get caught off guard.
What Does "Stick the Dealer" Mean?
In Euchre, after the top card from the kitty is turned up, players get one chance to tell the dealer to pick it up and make that suit trump.
If everyone passes, a second round begins where players can name a different suit as trump.
But here’s the twist:
If everyone passes again, the dealer must choose a trump suit. No passing allowed.
That moment is known as "Stick the Dealer."
Why It’s a Big Deal
Sometimes the dealer has a terrible hand.
They didn’t want to pick up the original card.
Nobody else named trump either.
And now they’re stuck.
Forced to pick a trump suit with cards they may not want.
That’s why it can cause groans, laughter, or sheer panic. The fate of the hand now rests on a weak hand and a difficult decision.
How to Handle It Like a Pro
If you get stuck as the dealer, here are a few tips:
- Pick your longest suit, even if it isn't especially strong
- Don't panic — your partner may still help carry the hand
- Avoid going alone unless you have significant strength
- Accept the gamble — momentum shifts are part of Euchre
A Club Favorite Moment
"Stick the Dealer" hands often become some of the most memorable moments in Euchre.
It's the kind of situation that gets people laughing, shaking their heads, and rooting for the underdog — especially when a seemingly weak hand somehow turns into a winning one.
Euchre thrives on unpredictability, and few rules capture that better than Stick the Dealer.
Ready to Stick (or Get Stuck)?
The best way to understand this rule is to experience it for yourself.
Sooner or later, every Euchre player finds themselves staring at a weak hand while the entire table waits for them to call trump.
That's part of what makes the game so much fun.
