How Trump Works in Euchre: A Step-by-Step Explanation
If you’re new to Euchre or just getting back into the game, this step-by-step explanation will make it clear.
Step 1: What Is Trump in Euchre?
In Euchre, trump is the suit that beats all other suits for that hand. Once a trump suit is chosen, any trump card will beat any non-trump card, regardless of rank.
Each hand has a different trump suit, which keeps the game fast, strategic, and unpredictable.
Step 2: How Trump Is Chosen
After the cards are dealt, one card is turned face up. Players then have the opportunity to order up that suit as trump or pass.
If everyone passes, players get a second chance to choose a different suit as trump. If no one selects trump in the second round, the hand may be redealt — depending on house rules (often called “Stick the Dealer,” where the dealer must choose a trump suit).
Choosing trump is a strategic decision — you’re signaling confidence that you and your partner can win the majority of tricks.
Step 3: How Trump Changes Card Rankings
This is where Euchre becomes unique.
When a suit becomes trump, the Jack of that suit becomes the highest card in the game. This card is called the Right Bower.
The Jack of the same color as trump (but the other suit) becomes the second-highest trump card, known as the Left Bower.
For example, if hearts are trump:
-
Jack of hearts = highest card (Right Bower)
-
Jack of diamonds = second-highest card (Left Bower)
After the bowers, the remaining trump cards follow normal rank: Ace, King, Queen, 10, 9.
In a standard Euchre deck, cards 2 through 8 are not used.
Step 4: Following Suit vs. Playing Trump
Players must follow suit if they can. However, when trump is played, it overrides all non-trump suits.
Important note:
The Left Bower counts as trump, not as its printed suit. This is one of the most common beginner mistakes.
If hearts are trump, the Jack of diamonds is treated as a heart and must be played as trump if possible.
Step 5: Why Trump Matters So Much
Trump determines:
-
Which cards win tricks
-
When it’s safe to lead aggressively
-
When to hold back strong cards
-
When to support your partner
Understanding trump helps you recognize when a hand is strong enough to call trump — and when it’s better to pass.
Step 6: The Best Way to Learn Trump Is by Playing
Reading about trump helps, but playing Euchre in person is the fastest way to learn. Seeing trump in action — especially the bowers — makes everything click.
That’s why the Charleston Euchre Club keeps things relaxed, friendly, and welcoming to all skill levels.
Charleston Pro Tip:
At our meetups, you’ll often hear someone jokingly say “Read it and weep!” when they lay down the Right Bower. Don’t worry — it’s all in good fun.
